What is the Hong Kong Schools Self-Evaluation Network (HKSSEN)?
This is what Archie McGlynn, the Network Director says:

"HKSSEN is a coming together of schools that are committed to working and sharing to improve our schools for the benefit of students, parents and staff. The HKSSEN aims to share and learn from best practice in Hong Kong and internationally. This innovative network is for schools that:
  • Know that the starting point for an effective school is a readiness to improve through learning and self-evaluation -- to be 'a learning school'.
  • Learn from examples of best practice.
  • Encourage sharing of ideas, common issues and concerns.
  • Look beyond their 'school gate' for ideas and inspiration as well as looking at what is happening within their schools.
  • Wish to make use of professional advice, and ways of conducting self-evaluation and school improvement.
  • Know that external school review and school self-evaluation are 'two sides of the same coin' and both seek to bring about school improvement through development and accountability.
And most important of all, network schools know that the most important people in a  school are the pupils and students -- we are driven by the desire to put our young people first".

The network is designed to support your school to take forward school development and accountability under the framework of school-based management -- leading to systematic school self-evaluation (SSE) to enable you to answer the questions like How good is our School? How do we know how good it is? A bonus of a systematic approach to SSE is that you will be well-prepared for external school review (ESR). You will be given opportunities and challenges to provide answers to questions such as:

  • What are we aiming to do in our school and what have we set out to achieve for our students? Are we 'a confident school?'
  • How well are we meeting our aims?
  • How do we know how successful we are as a school in meeting our aims?
  • What are our strengths and where can we do better?
  • How good are we at taking account of the views of our students, parents and staff?
  • How well do we perform in the Four Domains set out in EDB's Performance Indicator Framework?
  • Once we have answers to the above questions, how do we go about improving our students' performance?

Members discuss with joy

Archie says take more leisure time during the Year of the Rat!
Archie says, "Take a day off!"

Archie is a firm believer in the value of taking time, to paraphrase Stephen Covey, to 'sharpen your saw'.  We all need to give our brain a rest now and then as well as to reflect on what we are doing - so why not have a break from work, especially on special days.
